2000 years ago just 50 days after the death and resurrection of Jesus, the Church exploded onto the scene in Jerusalem. The same city which just a few weeks earlier had been the venue of the inhuman torture of the Son of God was now buzzing with both a vibrancy and a heart felt repentance as Peter stood and preached to the expectant crowd. In one day 3000 people responded to the Gospel stepping into the freedom of the New Covenant and the security of Eternal Life. From that day on despite persecution the church continued to grow. It did not do so because of a pseudo human rights agenda, nor because of a social calendar that satisfied peoples entertainment needs. It grew because it offered reality and truth. It grew with a like minded people who had a desire for God and a heart for others to come into this new found freedom. A people who saw themselves as ambassadors of another realm with a mandate to release the glory of heaven.

Around the world the Gospel continues to bear fruit, hundreds of thousands are being saved every week. Miracles continue and lives are changed. However wherever this genuine change is occurring there is an obvious pattern, that of believers who have truly embraced a New Testament model as seen in the Book of Acts. What were the traits of this early church?

1. They were completely devoted to the Word of God and to Prayer, both personal and at corporate gatherings. To fellowship and unity and a commitment to regularly gather together as a community. To the Breaking of Bread demonstrated by living in the reality of Jesus sacrifice and the freedom of the New Covenant. Acts 2:42

2. Generous and Willing to Sacrifice they shared everything they had with one another and generously gave what they had.
Acts 2:44-47; Acts 4:

3. Willing to be Persecuted even at risk of their lives for the Gospel. Ridicule and opposition never dampened their spirit or resolve.
2 Cor 4:8-10: Rom 8:18

4. They were taught, received and held to Sound Doctrine in other words they lived a no-compromise life regarding the scriptures.
2 Tim 4:2-4

5. They were diligent to learn scripture they didn’t just read or listen, but they memorized large portions of text, deepening their foundations in truth and skillfully sharing what they had discovered. 2 Tim 2:15-17

6. They knew what it was to “pick up their Cross daily” they lived without fear of the future and in service to others – aware of God’s presence. Matt 16:24: Gal 2:20

7. They stood as shining examples in a world of corruption and hate they stood as representatives of another world, displaying a heart to minister life to others. Matt 5:14-16

8. They loved others unconditionally forgiveness, acceptance and honour was their motto as they lived for others.
John 13:35: Gal 5:6: Eph 4:15 16: 1 Cor 13
